Grounding (Earthing)

Grounding, also known as earthing, involves connecting directly to the Earth’s surface with our bare feet and hands. There’s a ton of research out there highlighting the healing, nourishing and calming effects it has on our nervous system and overall well-being. If you are unable to get outside, there are products out there that simulate the grounding experience.

Why is this important? Most of the time we’re wearing shoes made of non-conductive synthetic materials, which prevents contact with the Earth’s surface. This creates a disconnect in the body because they block the natural flow of electrons between the Earth and our bodies. Connecting with the Earth helps to balance our body’s natural, electrical state.

What are some the benefits of grounding?

  • It’s FREE!

  • Reduces inflammation in the body

  • Decreases stress

  • Improves blood flow, mood and quality of sleep.

  • For athletes, it can delay muscle soreness and shorten recovery time.

My first summer in Portland was two years ago. It’s been sunny almost every day and I’m outside as much as possible. I can see why everyone says the summers here are so great! I’m grateful for the house I’m currently living in. Every morning, I sit outside with my hot cup of tea. If the sun is out, I close my eyes and use it as a time to BE with my tea and observe the natural elements around me. After finishing my tea, and it hasn’t been raining, I walk bare feet on the grass, grounding myself into the earth, taking some deep breaths, and setting my intentions for the day.

Contrast that to the past winter, which was full of rain, snow, ice, and lots of gloomy, gray, depressing days. It can really wear on you, especially when I check LA’s weather forecast. Growing up in Southern California, we are blessed with good weather almost year-round.

One thing I can say about the weather in Portland, is when the sun does make an appearance, you appreciate it that much more.
